2021 The cultural schoolbag @Fish take root
For several classes we gave a tour of the TWAPS installation Fish take root. None of the pupils had seen an exhibition on bio-art before, and there were questions and interesting discussions about our project and the idea of bio-art. The pupils came from one of the Lier schools, and were used to agriculture, however not everybody came from a farm, and knowledge about growing vegetables was very uneven.
At the end of the tour, we would ask them to take a mask – which we had gotten so used to during the pandemic but use it as a blindfolder instead. Then we would give them herbs. Let them guess what they were eating. 10 different herbs. We were impressed that the idea gave such a great outcome. Out of 48 pupils only 2 did not want to participate, while the rest went willingly into blindfolding and were able to trust the receiving herbs so much so, that they would put it into their mouth to taste. For the other: the oldest herb, lovage, that Norway has been growing since the 1600, could not be identified of any of the different groups. None of the four groups could identify all the 10 herbs, mostly the result was 8 out of 10.
